Hydronic Buffer Tank

Hydronic buffer tanks improve the efficiency of your heating system. They store water heated by the boiler so it is ready to be circulated though the heating pipes.

A boiler will have a limit on its heating range. Older model boilers often produced either very hot water, on no heating at all. More modern designs allow a range of heating options between these two extremes. A buffer tank positioned after the boiler allows for temperatures that are not at the extreme of the boilers range.

There are 2-pipe and 4 –pipe buffer tanks. Both of these are configured so the water being sent to eh heating pipes and the water returning from those pipes run through the same tank. The pipes sending the water are located at the top of the hydronic buffer tank as hot water will rise to the top of the container. Return pipes are located at the base of the container, where the older water collects. This system allows for steady flow rates of liquid through the heating system without the temperature of the liquids being affected too greatly.
